Agent reveals rising star snubbed strong Liverpool, Man Utd interest

A former Liverpool full-back who now works as an agent has revealed a young England international rejected the chance to join both Man Utd and Liverpool.

Both Man Utd and Liverpool have altered their transfer policy in recent years, opting to seek out younger stars with a view to developing their careers at the club.

Another side who have taken that philosophy to the next level is Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga giants have already shown joining the club can be the perfect place for an up and coming talent to improve their craft.

Jadon Sancho is the prime example, though Gio Reyna and Jude Bellingham also fit the bill.

The latter of that trio was in high demand when it became apparent he would leave Brmingham City in the summer.

Now, according to former Reds right-back Philipp Degen – now an agent – the recently capped England starlet turned down the chance to join Man Utd and Liverpool.

Degen told the Blood Red podcast (via the Liverpool Echo): “It is one of the biggest victories for Dortmund [to sign Bellingham] because the challenge to get this player was very, very high and they had to fight for months.

“I know his agent, and I am a very good friend of him, and I know which kind of fight it was – every top club in Europe wanted to sign him.

“Dortmund made this challenge and they won it and it is the right step for me to get to a big star. Dortmund have shown before that they can develop players to a higher level and they can do very big steps, so it was the right decision.

“Real, Barca, AC Milan, Inter, AS Roma, Bayern Munich, Dortmund – all the top teams in England, especially Man United – and when you see the fight for this boy, it was massive.

“Even between the agents – and I know Mark (Jude’s father) , his agent very well – and I really like when people have a straight mind and they never forget from where they are coming.

“It was the right decision and the right move – that is clear.”

Cyber attack could affect Man Utd transfers

Meanwhile, last week’s cyber attack on Old Trafford has threatened to derail Manchester United’s scouting operation ahead of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils’ computer systems were hacked on November 20, with reports that a multi-million pound ‘ransom’ was demanded. Those responsible allegedly say they will leak confidential information but club officials are yet to comment.

United say forensic cyber experts are looking into the matter to determine the extent of the problem. It is not known if any sensitive material involving potential signings has been stolen in the breach. However, the club’s email system is still down more than a week after the attack.
