Arsenal capture close as ex-Saint confirms target is ‘in the process of moving’

A new Arsenal signing could be just around the corner after Jose Fonte confirmed his Gunners-linked teammate is ‘in the process of moving’.

Arsenal are expected to be operating with a restricted budget in the transfer window this summer.

Free agent signing Willian evidenced this approach, though regular transfers could still materialise if sales are made first.

One player Mikel Arteta’s side have been heavily linked with is Lille centre-half Gabriel Magalhaes.

The imposing Brazilian, 22, could be available for the seemingly great value figure of around £25m.

Such a bargain proposition has attracted the attentions of Man Utd, Everton and Napoli, but the latest report suggested Arsenal were head and shoulders above the rest.

Now, according to former Southampton defender and current Lille teammate Jose Fonte, Gabriel is inching closer to his next destination.

“The club has allowed him to speak with other clubs and he’s is in the process of moving, to be quite honest,” Fonte told talkSPORT (via Goal) when asked to weigh in on Gabriel’s future.

“It’s just about him choosing which club, which is a great position to be in.

“He just needs to choose where he wants to go, and they’re all good clubs, so that’s fantastic.

“I’m happy for him, I’m very, very happy for him. He’s a great player.

Arsenal’s main rival in their pursuit appeared to be Napoli. But Fonte’s reveal of Gabriel asking specifically about the Premier League has seemingly handed Arsenal a major boost.

Fonte continued: “Everybody’s dream is to play in the Premier League. He’s been asking me questions about the Premier League and asking questions about clubs in the Premier League.

“So I tried to give him the best and honest opinion.

“Hopefully he’ll make his decision and he’ll be very successful, I have no doubt about it.”

Arsenal figure fires Liverpool-target Thiago warning

Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara has been told a move to Liverpool won’t bring forth what he desires. That’s according to Arsenal academy manager, Per Mertesacker.

The Reds have presided over a low-key summer window so far, but that could soon be about to change.

Links with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago have strenghtened in recent weeks, though one pundit warned the transfer may face further delays.

Now, Mertesacker has weighed in on the situation, and urged Thiago to have caution when it comes to his ‘very ambitious’ Liverpool plans.
