Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang urged to join more ‘ambitious’ club by president of Gabon FA – ‘He’s won nothing there’

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been urged to leave Arsenal and sign for a ‘move ambitious club’ by the president of the Football Association in his homeland Gabon.

The Gunners striker has 20 goals for this season and was joint-top scorer in the Premier League with 22 goals last term, but there are big doubts over his long-term future at the Emirates.

Aubameyang’s contract expires at the end of the 2020/21 season and there has been no news over a possible extension, while Barcelona have been linked with an interest in the former Borussia Dortmund man.

The frontman has scored 49 Premier League goals since joining Arsenal in January 2018, but he is yet to be rewarded for his brilliant form with any silverware.

In fact, the Gabon international has never won a league title or European trophy in his career, despite being one of the most consistent goalscorers in the whole of Europe over the last decade.

It’s unlikely the Gunners will be in a place to challenge to top honours any time soon, either, and Pierre Alain Mounguengui believes he deserves to play for a bigger club where he can finally lift top trophies.

“Right now, he’s at Arsenal, and he’s won nothing here, so it’s a collective failing,” Gabon FA president Mounguengui told ESPN.

“I don’t want to say that Arsenal aren’t ambitious, but Arsenal don’t have ambitions as high as some other clubs as far as Europe is concerned.

“So if Pierre could secure a contract with a more ambitious club, he’d definitely find his place there.

“On an individual level, we all consider him to be among the best players in the world, but the advice I give to him is to continue to work and to attract the attention of the biggest clubs and the most ambitious clubs.”

Only last month Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insisted he wanted to keep hold of Aubameyang ‘under any circumstances’ and urged his club to begin negotiations over a new contract before the end of the campaign.

But Mounguengui says the national hero must push to end his career at a ‘major club’.

“All Gabonese people see Aubameyang at this level, where he can now end his career at a major club and, above all, beyond individual trophies, to bring home a major competition.”
