Arsenal transfer blow with Atletico Madrid keen on swapping Gunners target Thomas Partey for Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Arsenal’s plan to buy Thomas Partey could be ruined with Atletico Madrid hoping to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Liverpool.

Partey has emerged as a top Gunners target over the past few weeks and Mikel Arteta hopes to bring him to the Emirates when the transfer window finally reopens.

However, the defensive midfielder, 26, has a £45million release clause and Atleti have doubts Arsenal can afford such a fee given the expected financial fallout caused by coronavirus.

Nonetheless, Partey wants to move to the Premier League and a switch over the coming months is expected.

But Arsenal may not be his eventual destination, with Atleti ready to offer him to Liverpool in a swap deal for England international Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Sun claim Atletico want a straight swap deal involving Partey and Oxlade-Chamberlain, though Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to sanction such a transfer as he considers the Ox to be a key member of his squad.

Ghana international Partey has spent his entire career with Atletico Madrid, progressing from their reserve team to the senior squad in 2015 and going on to make nearly 200 appearances for the Wanda Metropolitano club.
