Aston Villa eyeing up ex-Tottenham star enjoying career resurgence

Aston Villa are hopeful of agreeing a deal for a former Tottenham star who has bounced back since his Spurs departure, according to a report.

Villa secured their Premier League survival on the final day of the season to finish in 17th place.

Their achievement was all the more remarkable after the club finished the season with the league’s second most goals conceded (67).

Hoping to enjoy a more sedate season in the top flight this year, Villa have been busy scouting for transfer reinforcements.

Links to a swoop for a Celtic hitman have emerged, though it is regarding their leaky defence that the latest report concerns.

The Telegraph (via the Daily Mail) reveal that Villa are plotting a raid on Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier.

Trippier’s form that culminated in a starring role at the 2018 World Cup faded during his last year with Spurs. Though the player himself put that down to the club mishandling his injury situation.

The 29-year-old former Tottenham right-back left England for Spain last summer, and became an integral part of Diego Simeone’s plans once his initial injury struggles were overcome.

The spending power of the Premier League allows for clubs like Villa to raid prominent European clubs. And the report states manager Dean Smith will seek either a loan or permanent deal.

Genuine quality is light at right-back between Frederic Guilbert and Ahmed Elmohamady, and Trippier is seen as an ideal upgrade.

Mourinho in contact over 30-goal star

Pizzi Benfica TEAMtalk

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has contacted Benfica to ask about the availability of midfielder Pizzi, according to a report.

Mourinho is keen to perform a squad overhaul this summer ahead of his first full season in charge. Indeed, he has already brought in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart.

The Portuguese boss hailed “amazing” Spurs chairman Daniel Levy for completing those deals but reports claim the manager wants five new signings in total.

According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), one player on Tottenham’s shortlist is Benfica midfielder Pizzi.

The source claims Mourinho became intrigued by reports claiming the 30-year-old, right-sided player could be available for €20million (£18million).
