Graham Potter insists Ben White’s focus remains on Brighton amid reports Liverpool could look to sign him in January.
The Reds lost Virgil van Dijk to an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
Indeed the Dutchman faces a race to play again this season after Jordan Pickford’s rash challenge.
As such, pundits such as Jamie Carragher have called on Jurgen Klopp to dip into the market in January. While Fabinho shines when asked to fill in, injury-prone pair Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are Jurgen Klopp’s only two senior recognised centre-backs.
As such, a report this week claimed Liverpool were plotting a move for White when the January window opens. The 23-year-old shone during a year’s loan with Leeds and has not looked out of place in the Premier League.
That apparent interest resulted in a claim that the Seagulls would do business with Liverpool if they paid an eye-watering £50million.
However, Potter has been quick to dampen claims the defender is heading to Anfield. The Seagulls boss always had quite the sarcastic response to transfer speculation surrounding White.
“I think it is a bit like it was at the start of the season. All sorts of talk about him doing this, him doing that, and it is generated by outside, by outside of our control really.
“It is part of the football noise. The transfer window closed last week and we are already having conversations around transfer speculation. It’s just the way it is.
“I know he is level-headed enough to not let it affect him.
“I think at this level you have to know it is part of the territory. It is part of the job of being a footballer, while it’s part of what you have to deal with.
“Consistently all he has done is get on with his football. He has come into training, tried to be professional, tried his best, and tried to play football. I have no concerns about Ben.”
Ben White £50m fee explained
Albion appear to be in no hurry to cash in on White, while they don’t appear actively trying to push for his departure.
And Potter has suggested that may be behind the media’s apparent decision to place a £50m fee on White’s head.
Indeed, Potter is adamant that no-one at Brighton has even mentioned a price for the defender and sarcastically hit out at the media for putting the fee on the player.
Potter said: “I haven’t heard anything about that one. Apparently if it comes in the media it must be true, eh?”
