Brighton could double Ben White contract offer as Leeds made to wait

Brighton will wait until after pre-season to make a decision on Ben White’s future, according to a report.

White is at the centre of a transfer tussle this summer, as Leeds United are keen to have him back. The defender spent last season on loan at Leeds and was ever-present as they gained promotion from the Championship.

The form he showed over the past year has given Brighton a decision to make on his future. The Seagulls know they have plenty of suitors for the 22-year-old, but could look to keep him themselves.

However, such a decision will have to wait. According to The Sun, Brighton want to assess White in pre-season before considering the next step.

If White impresses manager Graham Potter, then he could receive a huge new contract. Brighton have already put offers worth around £25,000-per-week on the table, but they could stretch to as high as £50,000-per-week.

White is yet to commit to the terms Brighton have offered him so far. The next few weeks will be pivotal to both club and player coming to a decision.

The report from The Sun adds that Chelsea are also interested in signing the centre-back. However, the Blues also have interest in fellow Brighton man Lewis Dunk – so if they chose him instead, that could open up an opportunity for White at the Amex Stadium.

Chelsea are willing to bid £40m for Dunk. He would be a cheaper alternative to their main target, which is West Ham’s Declan Rice.

As for the value of White, Brighton have already rejected three bids from Leeds. The most recent was in the region of £30m – with Brighton wanting at least £35m before considering a sale.

The South Coast club have already admitted they have an “abundance” of defenders. Their chairman Tony Bloom has accepted that some players will have to leave.

“I’m not going to speculate on whether we may or may not get offers for many of our players,” he told The Athletic towards the start of this month.

“We certainly do have an abundance of centre-backs and there are constant discussions between myself and Graham and Dan [Ashworth, technical director] and the recruitment team about what our needs are, what’s going to be happening.

“There will be some players who go out on loan at some point during pre-season or the first few weeks of the season.”
