Celtic, Rangers ready to swoop for Liverpool striker still waiting for debut

Celtic and Rangers are interested in taking striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Liverpool, according to a report.

Awoniyi is currently out on loan at Union Berlin, who are punching above their weight in the Bundesliga this season.

Union are currently fifth in the German top flight, and Awoniyi has been a key part of their success so far. The forward has scored five goals and set up two more from his 14 appearances in the Bundesliga.

His form has already caught the attention of several clubs who would like to prise him away. According to 90min, some Premier League sides are interested in Awoniyi.

However, the main contenders so far are Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers, who would like to take him to Scotland.

Awoniyi is yet to play for Liverpool due to difficulties acquiring a work permit. Hence, he has spent most of his time with the club out on loan.

There is some confidence that his form in Germany could earn him a call-up for the Nigerian national team, which would help his case for a work permit.

Even so, it seems Liverpool are likely to cash in on the 23-year-old. A price tag of around £5m is mooted for his permanent departure.

It may be slightly easier for Awoniyi to get a work permit to play in Scotland. The report from 90min points to how Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos was able to get one before he became a regular Colombia international.

Therefore, if Awoniyi returns to Liverpool, he could soon be sent north of the border. It seems his next move may be a final farewell.

He is still under contract until 2023, but it appears Liverpool are ready to make the most of his good form by selling him on for a decent profit.

Liverpool in advanced talks over defender exit

Another player who could secure a transfer away from Liverpool is young defender Sepp Van Den Berg.

Despite injuries to Liverpool’s main centre-back options, Van Den Berg is still waiting for his Premier League debut. Jurgen Klopp has promoted Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips instead of the Dutchman.

Therefore, Liverpool are now looking to send Van Den Berg out on loan. There is a lot of interest in the teenager.

Now, his next destination is starting to become clear. Like Awoniyi, he will move to the Bundesliga – although it is not yet clear which club will take him.

However, reports suggest a German club could sign Van Den Berg by the end of the week.
