Reports claim Manchester City are now in the mix to sign Bayern Munich’s David Alaba and could hold all the aces to seal the deal.
Alaba, 28, will be out of contract next summer and so is free to speak to foreign clubs in January. Talks over a new contract have not borne fruit and it seems as though he will leave the Allianz Arena.
A number of possible suitors have been mentioned, with Real Madrid known to be keen. Manchester United’s name was also thrown into the hat but that particular avenue may have closed.
Chelsea and Liverpool are also known admirers but City may have nudged above the duo in his pursuit. The Etihad outfit were mentioned as having an interest earlier this week but Fussball Transfers have expanded on that.
Pep Guardiola is a big fan of the Austria international and there was the possibility of a deal last summer. The player’s agent, Pini Zahavi, suggested a deal to swap Alaba with City’s Leroy Sane.
That failed to materialise with Alaba reported to have felt ‘underappreciated’ with that scenario. But now it is said that Guardiola will allow Alaba to play in midfield if he moves to Manchester.
Traditionally a left-back, the Vienna-born ace is known to favour a midfield berth and it could be a deal breaker. There is no word from City but Guardiola has ‘a good relationship’ with the star.
The versatile player is now thought to be ‘more open’ to a move to City. But Real are leading the race while Paris Saint-Germain is another possibility.
Guardiola unlikely to have hand forced
It seems obvious City would want a player of Alaba’s class. However, it is open to debate whether a manager of Guardiola’s standing would guarantee any player a midfield place.
The Spaniard will always do what is right for the club. And so talk of Alaba being given an automatic midfield berth must be taken with a pinch of salt.
He would need to earn his spot in the side and that is never easy with the talent on view.
Spain seems the more likely destination for a player entering his peak years. Barcelona have been linked in the past but it is not known if the Catalans still hold an interest.
Bayern are next in action on Sunday when they host Mainz. The transfer window will be open by then and thoughts will turn to Alaba’s future.
