Concerns for second Liverpool defender, as sources explain hospital visit

Liverpool defender Joel Matip is a doubt for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Ajax after complaining of muscle discomfort, according to reports.

The Times‘ Paul Joyce and the Liverpool Echo say that the centre-back raised the leg complaint after Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

As such, club doctors sent him for a scan the same day, which – luckily – picked up no ‘major’ issue.

But while his problem pales in comparison to Virgil van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara’s injuries, Liverpool will be wary.

Matip has a poor injury record at Anfield, suffering seven injuries since his move from Schalke.

Indeed his most recent injury – a knee problem last season – kept him out between October and January and saw him miss 20 games.

The Liverpool Echo claims that the scan was a ‘precaution’ given that record.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp will still face a selection problem ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Ajax.

With Matip’s concerns, Joe Gomez remains Liverpool‘s only fully-fit recognised centre-back. Fabinho could slot in alongside him, given his impressive showing away at Chelsea.

Klopp and his staff will continue to monitor Matip’s progress, ahead of the trip to the Netherlands.

Liverpool will be especially cautious, though, given Van Dijk faces a race to play again this season after his injury.

The 29-year-old requires knee surgery after Jordan Pickford’s rash challenge in Saturday’s 2-2 draw.

Thiago, meanwhile, will be out for a shorter period of time but his teammates will no doubt feel his absence.

Carragher voices Liverpool concerns

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher feels Van Dijk’s injury puts Liverpool’s title credentials under threat.

The Netherlands captain last missed a Premier League game in January 2018 and played every top-flight game in the past two seasons.

As such, Carragher adds that Liverpool may have to dip into the transfer market to help offset his absence.

One report has claimed that Brighton star Ben White is on the Reds’ radar, but that the club have a key doubt about whether he could fit in at Anfield.
