Cut-price Sampdoria defender ‘ticks every box’ and gives Klopp the answer he needs at Liverpool

Liverpool appear to have found an ideal replacement for Dejan Lovren in the heart of their defence in the shape of Sampdoria defender Omar Colley.

The Croatia international ended a six-year spell at Anfield by joining Zenit St Petersburg for £10.9m.

His departure leaves Jurgen Klopp on the lookout for new central defensive cover. Since then, they have been linked with a plethora of names.

Liverpool were reported to be tracking Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, who has an exit clause set at €75m.

Brighton defender Ben White, who shone during a loan spell at Leeds, has also been mentioned.

They were also said to be on the trail of Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, who is valued at £32m.

Furthermore, Celtic giant Kristoffer Ajer is another who appears to under consideration.

However, money is tight at Liverpool and the Reds would likely have to sell before they can buy.

But a cut-price solution appears to be at hand. According to SampNews24, Liverpool scouts have targeted Colley.

The 27-year-old is in his prime and has impressed with his organisational skills and reading of the game.

Key to Liverpool, however, remains the exit clause that exists in the Gambian’s contract. As per the Italian outlet, Colley can leave the Genoan club for just £10.8m.

Colley has made 52 appearances for the Serie A club since a move from Genk and appears to tick all the boxes Klopp needs.

As such, the article speculates that a bid could soon be forthcoming from the Reds.

The report suggests Burnley and Celtic are also keen, though the latter’s interest depends on Ajer.

‘Arrogant’ Van Dijk told to go back to basics

One man who could perhaps do with a jolt is the usually-reliable Virgil van Dijk.

However, the Dutchman’s uncharacteristic error against Leeds gifted Patrick Bamford a second equaliser, leading to plenty of criticism.

Speaking to talkSPORT about the latter incident, Gabriel Agbonlahor questioned whether Van Dijk can yet be considered among the greatest defenders in Premier League history.

“Everyone knows Virgil van Dijk is an unbelievable defender,” the former Aston Villa striker said. “On the ball he can switch the diagonals, and defensively no one wants to come up against him.

“But I felt yesterday’s performance was, from Van Dijk, arrogant; that flick he made in the goal he gave away, it felt like ‘we are playing Leeds United, it’s going to be an easy game and I can let my standards drop’.

“Van Dijk is a great defender, and he will be one of the greatest defenders to ever play the game.

“But when people start putting him in the Vincent Kompany and Rio Ferdinand bracket, I think people forget how good certain players were as time goes by.”
