David Silva sends Barcelona, Real Madrid warning after joining Sociedad

Former Manchester City star David Silva has made clear his ambitions after returning to Spain with Real Sociedad

The 34-year-old midfielder ended his trophy-laden 10-year stay at the Etihad Stadium earlier this month.

And on Monday, he was officially unveiled by new club Real Sociedad. The serial winner is clearly in no mood to ease himself quietly towards retirement.

The silky playmaker clearly has aims to dethrone LaLiga’s dominant forces in Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Silva told a press conference: “The team is playing some great football and I hope to add to that here. I hope to have some great years at the club.

“I have high expectations in terms of the football we’ll be playing and I think we can compete for silverware.

“I’ve been lucky enough to win a lot of things in my career. I’m very competitive and I’m going to try and do the same here because that’s why I’ve been brought in.”

Silva, for so long a part of City’s quest for Champions League glory, will play in the Europa League next season. That’s courtesy of Sociedad’s sixth-placed finish in LaLiga.

Competing for Europa League glory is a prospect he is relishing.

He said: “Of course, after so many years of playing in Europe, you want to continue doing that. I also came because I like the style of football the team plays.”

City plan David Silva statue tribute

Silva is to be honoured with a statue at the Etihad Stadium.

The Spaniard will also have a training pitch named after him with a mosaic alongside it at the club’s City Football Academy complex.

Silva made 436 appearances for the club and won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and two FA Cups after signing from Valencia in 2010.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “David Silva is a transformational player – a quiet leader who has acted quietly and deliberately and inspired everyone around him.

“He has put a stamp on the team, on this club, its history and even the Premier League as a whole.

“In doing so he has been instrumental to the beautiful football philosophy you see today. He was the start of it.”
