Dortmund play tempting ace card in bid to stop Sancho joining Man Utd

Borussia Dortmund reckon they can still persuade Jadon Sancho to stay at the Westfalenstadion this summer despite heightening speculation a move to Manchester United had been agreed.

England winger Sancho, 20, has become one of European football’s hottest properties since his departure to the Bundesliga nearly three years ago.

The England international has stepped it up a gear this term, having scored 17 goals and assisted 19 others in 35 appearances and now reportedly tops United’s list of targets for the summer transfer window.

And while the Red Devils tried, and failed, to sign him last summer, it looks increasingly likely that its a case of second time lucky for the Reds Devils after it was claimed Sancho had given the green light on a move to Old Trafford.

Furthermore, BVB have admitted they will not stand in the player’s way if he wants to leave this summer.

However, following reports Dortmund have cut their price from £120million to £100m for the attacker, Dortmund CEO Hans Joachim Watzke is adamant they will not lower their valuation of the player and insist they are under no obligation to sell.

“I can explicitly say that even the very rich clubs, despite the existential crisis, should not believe that they can go on a bargain tour with us,” Watzke said.

“We don’t have to sell anyone below their value.”

In addition, it’s also reported that Dortmund are ready to play an ace card in their efforts to keep him from United’s clutches after it was claimed they were preparing a mammoth wage hike to try and persuade Sancho to sign a new deal to stay in the North Rhine-Westphalia region.

As per Forbes, Dortmund are prepared to increase Sancho’s wage to £9m (€10m) per season, which is an increase of £3.5m (€4m) on his current deal.

And by signing the contract, Sancho would become the club’s second highest earner on a package of £173,000 a week behind Marco Reus, who is paid a reported £180,000 a week.

It’s claimed Dortmund believe they can finance the wages by the summer exit of another top earner in Mario Gotze, who looks set to leave as a free agent.

Watzke outlines Sancho confidence

Forbes reckons the approach could yet win the day, and Watzke doesn’t think Sancho even wants to leave at the end of this season.

“In my opinion, I don’t think he wants to leave,” Watzke added.

“I think he has the feeling that this club has a good future.

“It’s not a question of money. For us, it would be the best position if he stays at Borussia Dortmund.

“We have enough money. We want to have titles. I think this team has a lot more potential with Jadon than without Jadon.”

United have also been linked with a move for Jack Grealish and the update on Sancho’s future might explain this rather unexpected positional change Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has in mind should he sign the Aston Villa star.
