Ed Woodward warns Paul Pogba over new Manchester United contract

Manchester United have told Paul Pogba to forget about a Alexis Sanchez-style pay packet if he signs a new contract, claims a report.

United finally managed to offload Sanchez to Inter Milan in August with two years to run on his massive United contract.

Sky reported the Chile star received a “small pay-off from United” after agreeing to waive the final two years of his £560k-per-week contract.

It saved United around £40m in wages and club officials are wary of making the same mistake with a deal for Pogba.

ESPN report that Ed Woodard and Co. have already warned Pogba that a bumper rise is nor on the cards.

United recently exercised the one-year option in the 27-year-old’s contract, tying Pogba to Old Trafford until June 2022.

That will buy the club time over negotiating another deal for the France midfielder.

The report suggests that United are keen on extending Pogba’s stay but the offer to keep him will not break the bank.

Executive vice-chairman Woodward and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer “are in agreement the wage structure will not be broken for any player”.

Pogba will be given a pay rise on his £270,000-a-week deal if he signs a new contract, but  ntermediaries in the deal have been told that a mega offer will not be forthcoming.

Pogba to remain on bench?

United are said to be “relaxed” about the process and Pogba could run into the final year of his contract.

Pogba himself is believed to be unsure where his future lies after recently speaking about his “dream” to play for Real Madrid.

Juventus were also planning to make a move in the summer to re-sign the player, but the Covid-19 pandemic severely crippled their finances and they were not in a position to make a move.

Meanwhile, a more pressing matter for Pogba is to win back his place v Chelsea.

Solskjaer has left Pogba on the bench for the back-to-back victories against Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain.
