Guardiola prepared to ruin Chelsea’s momentum in £85m target hunt

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is prepared to join Chelsea counterpart Frank Lampard in the race to sign Ben Chilwell, according to a report.

Lampard reportedly took a huge step to improve his side last week by agreeing a deal to sign Timo Werner.

The news added to the excitement around Chelsea ahead of next season, with Hakim Ziyech also making Lampard’s attack one to watch next term.

However, reports say that Lampard does want to end there, with Leicester left-back Chilwell his next top target.

Lampard has given opportunities to Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri this season but he reportedly wants a top new addition, with the former pair linked with a move to Italy.

However, the Daily Telegraph says that Chelsea will face competition from City, if the Manchester club enter the market for a left-back.

The newspaper says that Guardiola has also identified Chilwell as his top target if the need arises.

Benjamin Mendy will hope to stay fit after a string of serious injuries which have scuppered his chances.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has also become a firm option but he could move into midfield.

The report adds, though, that Leicester’s valuation of Chilwell could become a key obstacle for both clubs.

The Foxes sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United last summer for £85million and rate Chilwell just as highly.

What’s more, Maguire’s sale means they are under much less pressure to do business this time round.

A previous report said that, given the financial impact of football’s shutdown, Chelsea could look to bring Chilwell in for cheaper than his valuation.

Chelsea will have an exciting array of options up front if Werner’s move to Stamford Bridge goes through.

The Blues have already shown exciting potential this term, with Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic settling in well.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, meanwhile, will be fit again after shaking off a hamstring injury.

Werner and Ziyech’s arrivals will mean Chelsea will have even more exciting potential ahead of next season.

Indeed, Alvaro Morata’s permanent move to Atletico Madrid will partly finance the moves.

Willian and Pedro will also both leave, freeing up vital room on the club’s wage bill.
