Hunt for lethal striker ‘all over’ after Liverpool boss Klopp’s ‘decisive’ call

The race to sign Victor Osimhen is “all over” after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp personally asked the club to move for the Lille striker, according to one journalist.

Osimhen is likely to move away from Lille this summer after scoring 18 goals in 38 games in his debut season.

Concrete reports initially suggested he was to join Napoli. The Nigerian had eased his concerns about racism in Italy after speaking to Kalidou Koulibaly and was close to signing for €81million.

However, Osimhen’s change of agent complicated proceedings, forcing Napoli to start negotiations from scratch.

What’s more, the new agent has reportedly contacted Liverpool and Manchester United, two other clubs linked with his signature.

Now, RAI Sport journalist Ciro Venerato has revealed that Klopp has “officially” asked to sign Osimhen. Indeed, the reporter also states the striker still had doubts about moving to Italy.

“New and perhaps decisive steps forward in Liverpool’s purchase of Osimhen,” Venerato told Calcio Napoli 24 (via Sport Witness).

“His new agent seems to have left little margin for the Blue management after a telephone talk. There are signs of cosmic pessimism mixed with resignation coming from Castel Volturno. After [Nicolas] Pepe, Osimhen seems to have vanished too.

“The change of agent has proven decisive. But we mustn’t forget the past. The boy had long had doubts about his destination. He dreamt of the Premier League.

“Naples was his alternative choice in the absence of concrete offers. Now that Klopp has officially asked for him, it’s all over.

“The appeal of the European champions, the Reds is too strong, money aside. There’s not only economic reasons for Oshimen. The Premier League is the dream of all Nigerian boys.”

LIVERPOOL NEEDING BACK-UP?

Should the latest claims be true, they would provide a welcome boost to Liverpool in the hunt for attacking back-up.

While Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have scored over 250 goals between them for the Reds, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri struggle to provide sufficient support.

Indeed, Shaqiri’s cameo against Arsenal was only his seventh Premier League appearance this season – his first since January.

However, the reports about Osimhen come amid a backdrop of a reluctance to spend from Liverpool. The Reds were close to a deal for Timo Werner, but backed out due to his alleged €50million release clause.

What’s more, after two quiet transfer windows, Premier League rivals Chelsea swooped in.
