Jorginho out, Pjanic in? How Chelsea could look next season with Frank Lampard’s transfer targets

It’s been a solid first season in charge for Frank Lampard at Chelsea.

Despite being banned from making any transfers in the summer, the fresh-faced English boss steered the Blues to fourth in the Premier League before coronavirus brought football to an unprecedented standstill.

One could even argue he has overachieved, given Chelsea’s top four rivals Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham have all bolstered their squads in the last two transfer windows.

However, Lampard will know there is a huge amount of work to do if he wants to bridge the gap to Man City and Liverpool, who are levels ahead of the rest of the Premier League at the moment.

Make no mistake, the £33million signing of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax is a great start. The Morocco international is one of the brightest talents in Europe, having scored 38 goals in 111 Eredivisie appearances for the Amsterdam club in his four years at the club.

More additions are needed and speculation has been rife Roman Abramovich is set to spend big in the summer like the days of old.

Recent reports suggest Jorginho could be on his way out of the club to reunite with Maurizio Sarri at Juventus, with Miralem Pjanic heading the opposite direction to Stamford Bridge.

But who else has been linked with a move to Chelsea and how could they look next season?

Ben Chilwell (Leicester)

One name who has been consistently linked with a move to Chelsea is Chillwell, and recent reports have suggested that Leicester may be willing to cash in on the full-back this summer.

Frank Lampard seeks to add defensive reinforcements when the transfer window opens and earlier this month it was suggested the Foxes were identifying replacements for the England international in anticipation of a £50m bid from the Blues.

Marcos Alonso has been criticised for a lack of consistency this season, while Emerson Palmieri – despite impressing in small bursts – has largely failed to win over fans during his short stint at Stamford Bridge.

Chilwell, the England international, has been a standout Premier League full-back in recent seasons and has been identified as a top target for Chelsea.

The 23-year-old has made 118 appearances for the Foxes since displacing Christian Fuchs from the starting XI throughout the 2016/17 campaign.

Miralem Pjanic (Juventus)

Everyone knows that Maurizio Sarri absolutely loves Jorginho, right? Well, after Jorginho followed Sarri to Chelsea in 2018, reports suggest the same could happen again with Juventus ready to swoop for the 28-year-old this summer.

The report interestingly suggests that Pjanic will be offered to Lampard in exchange for the midfielder.

The fact is, many Chelsea fans will be torn in regard to this deal.

Jorginho has improved massively and many Blues fans get the impression there is plenty to come from the Italy international, who struggled in his debut Premier League campaign.

Pjanic, however, has been one of the best midfielders in Europe over the last five years for Juventus – but age is not on his side as he turned 30 last month.

Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

Lampard is also believed to be on the hunt for a striker this season as he looks to add a proven goalscorer to his squad – and RB Leizpig ace Werner is at the top of his wishlist.

Speculation has been rife about the future of the Germany star, who has had a phenomenal campaign with 27 goals in 36 appearances.

Liverpool have also been heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old in recent months, but according to German outlet Bild, Anfield chiefs are unwilling to meet his £51m release clause as the financial devastation of COVID-19 continues to take it’s toll on Premier League clubs.

It is also believed Jurgen Klopp has been frustrated by the fact he cannot meet the player in person due to the pandemic.

The report states that United and Chelsea are now willing to take advantage of Liverpool’s transfer circumspection by advancing their interest in the red-hot frontman.

If Lampard is serious about challenging next season, he should prioritise the signing of Werner-  it would represent a real statement of intent from the club.
