Key hurdle emerges after Tottenham bid £16m for Brazil midfielder

Tottenham have submitted an €18million (£16million) bid to sign Flamengo’s Brazilian midfielder Gerson, according to a report.

Reports over the past few months have linked Tottenham and north London rivals Arsenal with the 22-year-old.

Indeed, the player’s father revealed that both clubs, as well as Borussia Dortmund, have shown initial interest.

He said: “Nobody knew about Arsenal, but now that I’m telling you, everyone will know.

“Everyone you hear there is true. But they only probed.”

However, Goal in Brazil now claims that Tottenham have made their interest in Gerson more concrete.

The report says Spurs submitted the €18million proposal in the past few days.

Goal adds though, that any decision Gerson takes on his future will wait a year, after he committed to extending his spell with Flamengo.

Gerson is reportedly a supporter of the club and wants to continue progressing under head coach Jorge Jesus.

What’s more, Flamengo have already ruled out negotiating with clubs about the player’s future.

Gerson began his career Fluminense before moving to Roma in 2016, but he failed to make his mark in Italy.

As such, he moved back to Brazil last summer and he was involved in the club’s run to the Club World Cup final against Liverpool.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has already confirmed that his side have no plans to spend “rivers of money” amid the impact of football’s recent shutdown.

Indeed, Spurs are the only Premier League side to date to take a loan from the Bank of England – worth £175million.

Mourinho’s side signed Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn in January and expect to have a fully-fit squad ahead of the Premier League’s restart later this month.

Spurs were one of the worst-hit sides earlier in the season, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min among those injured.

However, Kane is back from a hamstring injury and Son has recovered from an arm problem.

What’s more, Moussa Sissoko is raring to go after his own spell on the sidelines.
