Klopp plans quiet January, but registers interest in €40m, big-name attacker

Liverpool are “unlikely” to add any new signings to Jurgen Klopp’s squad in January, despite reported interest in Marco Asensio.

The champions have been credited with an interest in the Real Madrid man previously. Earlier this month Don Balon claimed that both Liverpool and Arsenal were interested in the attacking midfielder.

The report claimed the recent  “painful defeat in Kiev” had prompted Florentino Perez and Zinedine Zidane to run the rule over the Los Blancos squad. And Asensio was one of the players most at risk.

Now TodoFichajes suggest that Liverpool are looking at Asensio ahead of a move next summer.

The Spanish outlet claim Klopp tried to sign the 24-year-old “a couple of seasons ago”.  That was when, they claim, Asensio “was offering his best level”.

Now though his reputation has dimmed somewhat and so has his price tag because the source says his market value is €40m.

It’s unlikely Klopp will make a move next month, even though it’s claimed he will listen to offers for Divok Origi.

The Belgium striker is interesting Wolves and Liverpool are prepared to sell him in January.

The Athletic though suggest that Klopp will keep his powder dry next month.

“Liverpool are unlikely to make any additions to their squad during the January window,” writes James Pearce.

Klopp has been tipped to strengthen his defence with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out through injury. However, Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have stepped in and coped admirably and Klopp may just rely on them until the summer.

Ibanez interest

However, Liverpool have added Roma centre-back Roger Ibanez to their list of defensive targets, according to a report.

Defence is an area of priority for Liverpool at present, after Van Dijk and  Gomez both suffered serious injuries. The first-choice pairing might not feature until next season.

That leaves Joel Matip, who is also injury prone, as the only senior centre-back among their ranks. Fabinho has dropped into a deeper role to provide cover in recent months, while Jurgen Klopp has also called upon academy graduates like Williams and Phillips.

Several figures from inside the club maintain that Liverpool are more likely to stick with those players rather than bring in a new face in January. However, they continue to be linked with a number of potential reinforcements.

The latest suggestion, according to ASRomaLive, is Ibanez, who has enjoyed a rapid rise in 2020. The Brazilian joined Roma from Atalanta in January, having previously only played twice for his former club.
