Klopp to repeat 2018 contract decision as exit plan set for Liverpool star

Liverpool will allow Georginio Wijnaldum to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of next season, according to a report.

Wijnaldum has become a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s side since his arrival at Anfield in 2016. Indeed, no Reds midfielder played more Premier League minutes last season than the Dutchman.

However, he has entered the final year of the five-year deal he signed after leaving Newcastle.

While Klopp has dispelled calls for panic over the midfielder’s situation, reports suggest talks over a contract extension broke down earlier this year and have not re-opened.

According to The Athletic, Klopp and Liverpool have now decided to allow the 29-year-old to leave next summer.

The decision will mirror the one taken on Emre Can’s future in 2018. The German, who had also entered the final year of his deal, moved to Juventus on a free transfer that summer.

Indeed, Can in fact signed a pre-agreement with Juve during the season before completing his move to Italy.

It remains unclear whether Wijnaldum will follow a similar route, but The Athletic claims he will see the season out at Anfield.

Barcelona deal off the cards for Wijnaldum – for now

Reports had suggested Barcelona had put a move for Wijnaldum close to the top of their transfer priorities.

Barca boss Ronald Koeman is reportedly keen to reconvene with his compatriot; the pair worked together at the Netherlands national team.

However, LaLiga have reportedly stepped in to block a move this transfer window. Barcelona currently have a £510million yearly wage bill, which they need to reduce first.

The Camp Nou club are progressing on that front, with Nelson Semedo close to following Arturo Vidal out the exit door.

What’s more, LaLiga have reminded Barca of the requirement to pay the Spanish government the cost of any transfer in a separate deal.

This is after the government stepped in to hand teams financial aid during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
