Leeds eyeing up teenage England international after contract stalemate

Leeds Utd are plotting to swoop for Crystal Palace starlet Jadan Raymond after the youngster rejected his first professional deal with The Eagles.

Raymond, 16, has developed into a highly promising prospect while with the London club.

His progression has been rapid, and has already led to being capped for England at the under-17 level.

However, Raymond’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the current month, and Leeds are said to be in ‘advanced talks’ with the youngster.

The Athletic’s Whites expert, Phil Hay, tweeted that Leeds are ‘pushing’ to sign the teen sensation amid his contract uncertainty.

He noted (via FootballLeagueWorld) that Raymond seems ‘open to a fresh challenge’ after rejecting Palace’s offer.

The 16-year-old is described as being comfortable in multiple positions along the midfield line.

One avenue that could see Leeds emerge successful in their pursuit is their willingness to offer youth a chance.

Under enigmatic Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, The Whites have blooded academy graduates Leif Davis and Jordan Stevens into the first-team.

That reportedly ‘appeals’ to Raymond, though has also attracted the attentions of Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes.

Leeds apear to have stolen a march on their rivals, however, with the article noting the club are in ‘advanced talks’ with the starlet.

Whites reject free agent opportunity

Meanwhile, Leeds have reportedly turned their back on the chance to sign a free agent defender from their division rivals.

Towering Spanish star, Daniel Ayala, will leave Middlesbrough after coming to the end of his contract at the Riverside.

The former Liverpool academy graduate has already left the Teessiders after rejecting their offer to extend his stay beyond June 3o. That would have let him play in the club’s remaining Championship matches as Boro fight to stave off relegation.

However, he will now become a free agent on July 1 after neglecting to finish the season on Teesside.

Ayala had been strongly linked with a move to Leeds. United’s director of football Victor Orta knows the defender well from his own time at the Riverside.

Leeds have concerns over the long-term future of Ben White with the defender only on loan from Brighton. His magnificent form for Marcelo Bielsa’s side has seen him linked with a move to Liverpool and Man City.

So with Leeds having a big hole to fill in their defence, Ayala had been touted as a possible target.
