Leeds join hunt for Guimaraes attacker once heralded by Pochettino

Leeds continue to monitor the progress of Vitoria Guimaraes attacker Marcus Edwards as they ponder a future move, according to a report.

The 22-year-old winger left Spurs for Vitoria Guiamares last September after struggling for game time in north London.

Indeed, his permanent exit came after a loan spell in 2018/19 with Excelsior in the Netherlands. But while his form did not convince Tottenham to keep him at the club, he has shown sparkling form since.

In his first season in Portugal, the Englishman netted nine goals and assisted six others in 36 appearances. This term, meanwhile, he has continued to flourish and is pushing Vitoria up the top-flight table.

Indeed, a TEAMtalk exclusive earlier this week revealed West Ham were leading the hunt for Edwards ahead of the January window. There is also mounting interest in him from Southampton, Crystal Palace and Fulham.

However, Football Insider also claim Leeds are now keeping a close eye on his progress as they ponder a move in 2021.

They claim, however, Leeds have earmarked Edwards as a potential recruit for the summer rather than January.

Leeds recently invested £18m on Raphinha, with the Brazilian winger making a fine start to life at Elland Road.

United also have a deal in place to sign Jack Harrison from Manchester City. The winger is currently enjoying a third season’s loan from City but will make a permanent £10m switch in the summer.

All the same, they could yet be joined at Leeds by Edwards at some point down the line.

The left-footed attacker was likened to Lionel Messi and hailed as a “future great” by Mauricio Pochettino, on the eve of his Tottenham debut at the age of 17.

However, his time at Tottenham did not quite go to plan. Nonetheless, he could yet find himself back in the Premier League next year. That’s after he revived his career with some stirring displays in the Primeira Liga.

Bamford makes Haaland admission

Patrick Bamford, meanwhile, has revealed Marcelo Bielsa has been sending him videos of Erling Haaland in a bid to improve the Leeds striker’s performances in front of goal.

Questions were raised over Bamford’s suitability to life in the Premier League. That’s with the forward suffering a low conversion rate in the Championship.

However, with 11 games played, Bamford has eight goals to his name, joint fifth in the Premier League top scorers chart. Bamford should, arguably, be on nine after being cruelly denied by VAR in the defeat at Crystal Palace. That saw the Leeds striker brand the current rules as “daft”.

Bamford’s eight goals have all come from open play – that is second only to Haaland in Europe’s top five leagues.

Asked about his improvement, Bamford has revealed the advice he’s been getting from Bielsa. In addition to expert coaching, Bielsa has told his No 9 to watch videos on Dortmund goal machine Haaland.

Bamford told the Ornstein and Chapman Podcast of his manager’s methods: “Throughout the week you get sent various things.

“Sometimes you get clips of the defender you will be playing against.

“The last three weeks I had two or three videos sent every day of Erling Haaland. Each one is like, 15 minutes long.

“I had to watch them and see what I could pick out from him.”
