Liverpool eyeing centre-back move, but major doubt all-but strikes Brighton star off Klopp’s wish list

Liverpool still have Ben White on their transfer radar but a January move for the Brighton defender looks unlikely, according to a report.

The Reds lost Virgil van Dijk to an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

Indeed the Dutchman faces a race to play again this season after Jordan Pickford’s rash challenge.

As such, pundits such as Jamie Carragher have called on Jurgen Klopp to dip into the market in January, with injury-prone pair Joe Gomez and Joel Matip the manager’s only two senior recognised centre-backs.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool still have White in their thinking after his stunning loan spell at Leeds.

The 22-year-old has returned to Brighton this term, playing in all five Premier League matches so far. In fact, he has only missed 21 minutes of top-flight action since his move back to the Seagulls.

The source says that White has scored excellently on Liverpool’s detailed scouting assessments; the Englishman has impressed with his distribution skills and confidence in possession.

However the Reds are wary that he struggles in aerial duels, which is the key major doubt harboured by the club.

Football Insider adds that Gomez, who stands two inches taller than 6ft White, has better success in the air.

As such, there are concerns about whether he would be able to fit in in Klopp‘s defence.

White featured in all 46 Championship games for Leeds last season as Marcelo Bielsa’s men earned promotion.

What’s more, West Yorkshire club failed with three sizeable bids for the player. He has since signed a new contract after slotting in with Graham Potter and his new teammates.

Indeed he is yet to pencil in a date for his operation.

Taking to social media after finding out the extent of his injury, Van Dijk promised to come back stronger.
