Liverpool stance on strengthening key area revealed as two deals eyed

Liverpool will only strengthen at left-back if they can sign the right player, with Norwich’s Jamal Lewis among potential targets, according to a report.

Andy Robertson is the club’s only senior left-back, with the Scotsman nailing down his position in recent seasons.

The 26-year-old has proved a fantastic signing for less than £10million, combining his penchant for assists with defensive work rate.

However, Liverpool remain light in the position. James Milner is the recognised deputy, playing seven times on the left flank this season. What’s more, Jurgen Klopp has talked up Joe Gomez’s ability to slot in when needed.

As for a potential new recruit to support Robertson, Goal claims Liverpool would only sanction the right move.

One target reportedly on the club’s radar is Norwich’s Northern Ireland international Jamal Lewis. The 22-year-old has been a shining light for the Canaries in the club’s otherwise dismal return to the Premier League.

What’s more, Liverpool are keen on Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly. The 21-year-old left Bristol City for the south coast last summer and has made eight appearances in his debut season.

Kelly’s stock has risen given he can also play centre-back and Liverpool’s scouting team alerted the club prior to his Cherries move.

Both players should be available with Norwich already relegated and Bournemouth likely to follow the same fate.

West Ham’s 4-0 win over Norwich sealed the Canaries’ fate earlier this month, while Bournemouth suffered a hammer blow on Sunday after VAR ruled out their last-minute equaliser against Southampton.

LIVERPOOL’S VAN DEN BERG MOVE HAILED

Elsewhere, the mastermind of the ‘Moneyball’ recruitment system in the USA has praised Liverpool for signing Sepp van den Berg.

Liverpool signed the Netherlands Under-19 international last summer and he has made four appearances this season.

Billy Beane reckons the 18-year-old could prove to be a “shrewd” acquisition for Klopp and Liverpool.
