Liverpool to miss out on £17.5m windfall in Arsenal, Coutinho scenario

Liverpool could be out of pocket to the tune of £17.5m if Arsenal and Philippe Coutinho come to a swift agreement, according to a report.

The Brazilian playmaker will almost certainly be playing his football away from the Camp Nou this year.

His dream move to Barcelona in January 2018, quickly turned sour, with Coutinho frequently being dropped to the bench despite the huge outlay.

A loan switch to Bayern Munich materialised, but despite initial success, Coutinho failed to live up to expectations once more.

Out of Barcelona’s plans, Coutinho seems set to be on the move again, and the Premier League has been touted most frequently as the next destination.

An emotional return to Liverpool appeared high on Coutinho’s priority list, but Klopp and the Reds weren’t playing ball.

That opened the door for Arsenal, who have reportedly considered a loan move with an option to buy.

However, should such an agreement be reached, Liverpool could infact miss out on a £17.5m payment.

According to The Express, part of the £142m agreement that took Coutinho to Spain regarded an appearance-based add-on.

The article states that £17.5m of the fee will be paid to Liverpool once Coutinho reaches 100 appearances for Barcelona.

Currently sitting on 74 appearances, a loan move then permanent switch to Arsenal would ensure this landmark wouldn’t be reached.

Spanish outlet Sport are cited in the piece, where it is claimed Arsenal are weighing up the viability of an £18.2m loan fee.

Barcelona are said to be on board with the deal. While the club are described as being willing to take a ‘significant hit’ on their original expenditure.
