Zinedine Zidane has moved to deny reports that Raphael Varane could be allowed to quit Real Madrid and join Manchester United when the transfer window reopens.
United remain in the market for a top-class defender to partner Harry Maguire and were linked with several names over the summer.
United’s inconsistent start to the new season has only heightened talk that a new defender will be sought.
They conceded three times at home to Crystal Palace and twice against Brighton. United were then humiliated in a 6-1 loss to Tottenham in October.
Inspite of Maguire’s wobbly form, his place is no thought to be in doubt. Major question marks over his partnerships with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly do so remain.
As such, a report this week claimed United were exploring the possibility of signing Varane. Indeed, it was claimed two factors were now in their favour that pointed to a deal going through.
However, Zidane is adamant that Varane will not be allowed to leave and insists he’s highly-regarded by all at Real.
“It’s not just me [who wants to keep him],” Zidane said “He is part of this club, we were very lucky to be able to bring him to Madrid.
“He has a great career, he’s achieved a lot since he’s been here.”
Asked about the links elsewhere specifically, Zidane continued: “Of course, he is untransferable for the club, for the coach that I am, for people in general.
“That’s clear and unambiguous. Now we can’t stop people from talking. They’re not just talking about Varane, but about all the players, Real Madrid ones and others.
“But for Varane, my position is clear, and it’s the same as the club’s position.”
Transfer fixer looks to get star move to Man Utd
United are reported to have been informed that a deal for Ansu Fati could be back if they match their original summer bid.
Fati is one of the brightest stars to have emerged from the Barcelona academy in recent years. He is yet to reach adulthood, but already played a big part at Camp Nou last season.
That progress will continue this year, especially after Barcelona officially promoted the winger to the first team. As part of the arrangement, his release clause has shot up to €400m.
That though hasn’t stopped interested parties considering a bid. According to reports earlier this year, Barcelona received a €150m offer for Fati in the summer window.
However, the latter of those papers now believe a deal could be on the cards were United to match their summer bid.
They claim Barca’s financial situation means an offer for the teenager would now be considered. Barca are in turmoil and have rising debts that make any new acquisitions difficult for them in the current climate.
However, the sale of Fati would go a long way to solving some of their issues.
