Man Utd make contact with Kai Havertz, but Ole may have been too slow

Manchester United have been trying to convince Kai Havertz’s entourage about their exciting project at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, says a prominent German journalist.

Head of football at respected German outlet SportBILD Christian Falk has been speaking about United’s chances of signing the Bayer Leverkusen superstar with United website Utd Report.

Havertz is a man in demand, not in least because of his five goals in four games since the resumption of the Bundesliga.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool are believed to be interested in the midfielder, although Liverpool may well be out of the race after Jurgen Klopp recently admitted the Reds are unlikely to make any major signings this summer, having missed out on Timo Werner.

Werner was a man who seemed destined for Anfield, but once the trail went cold around Easter time, Chelsea quickly stepped up their interest and agreed to pay his €50millilion-plus release clause.

The Blues are also keen on Germany international Havertz and Falk has revealed Frank Lampard’s men could have been faster in making their approach to the 21-year-old.

Falk did though admit that United officials have spoken to Havertz’s representatives over a move to Old Trafford and United have tried to sell Solskjaer’s dream to the Bayer star.

“Manchester United is an option for Kai Havertz, because his management have been told about the big plans of the new team. But, Chelsea are more concrete in the talks at the moment.

“Perhaps Chelsea are again faster than United, like in the case of Timo Werner,” Falk said.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has though admitted that the Bundesliga club have not given up on keeping Havertz, whose contract expires in 2022.

“We haven’t given up hope that he’ll stay with us,” Voller told ARD, in quotes reported by Metro.

“We try to give him every possibility that he can call up his qualities.

“He did an outstanding job in the second half of the season.”

€100m price tag

Elsewhere, former Leverkusen head coach Reiner Calmund has insisted that Havertz will not be sold for less than €100million.

He told Sky Germany (via Goal): “The transfer market will calm down a bit and the Leverkusen company has the idea of collecting 100 million for [Havertz].

“The Leverkusen Trinity has decided that we won’t sell him for a cheaper price.”
