Man Utd pull plug on pursuit of Bayern Munich legend, deemed too costly

Manchester United have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign a nine-time Bundesliga champion due to concerns over wage costs.

David Alaba has been at Bayern Munch since 2011 but now looks set for pastures new.

The Athletic reports that the Austrian recently turned down a £200,000-a-week contract with the European champions.

It adds that Real Madrid are the frontrunners in the chase for his signature.

Indeed, it claims the Spanish giants would be willing to pay the earnings he is demanding.

The source states that United will not be pursuing his services anytime soon, despite previous interest.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to maintain a ‘balanced’ wage book and Alaba would disrupt this. The 75-time capped Austria international will not leave in January, regardless, though.

His contract expires in the summer and thus will likely leave Bayern on a free transfer.

On top of the nine German titles he has under his belt, Alaba has two Champions League winners medals. He was part of the squad that lifted Europe’s biggest club competition last season.

Alaba has played an incredible 404 games for his club, scoring 32 times and assisting 49 goals.

New club enters race for James

Manchester United winger Daniel James could make an exit in January. A number of clubs have registered their interest in taking the Welshman in on loan.

Leeds United, Burnley and Brighton have all thrown their names into the hat.

Now, Sam Allardyce’s West Bromwich Albion have also now earmarked the player as a potential recruit.

Solskjaer is ‘yet to decide’ whether he wants to let leave James leave next month.

The 23-year-old has struggled for game time this season although has impressed in recent outings.

James has played in eight matches for United this season, scoring twice.
