Man Utd target hints ‘messy’ few months dashed exciting transfer plans

Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek says his future “might have been different” had the coronavirus crisis not plunged the transfer market into uncertainty.

Van de Beek emerged as a top midfielder in the 2018/19 campaign, when he helped Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals. He was one of 30 players to receive a Ballon d’Or nomination last year.

As such, reports in recent months linked the Dutchman with an exciting move away. Links with Real Madrid were rife, while Manchester United are also reportedly keen.

Recent speculation continues to link United with a move, but Madrid announced in July that the financial impacts of the pandemic dashed their hopes of making major signings.

Speaking to Fox Sports, Van de Beek insisted that, despite the recent uncertainties, he would be happy to stay at Ajax.

“It is very messy, in any case a very messy period in terms of transfers,” the 23-year-old said. “Nothing is certain yet. I am still a player of Ajax and I am still proud to be there.

“If there had not been the coronavirus, it might have been different now. There is no clarity now and we have to wait and see how it turns out.

“I’m still here and after all these years I still have a lot of fun,” he added.

“If I also play at Ajax next season, I still have a lot of fun. You won’t hear me complaining.”

The coronavirus also forced Van de Beek’s season to end prematurely, with authorities curtailing the Eredivisie.

Nevertheless, the midfielder had a strong season, scoring 10 goals and assisting 11 others in 37 games.

Regardless of Van de Beek’s future, Ajax’s squad will look different next season. Winger Hakim Ziyech has joined Chelsea while defender Joel Veltmans has gone to Brighton.
