Man Utd valuation key as ignored Arsenal man could ‘say goodbye’ for Italy

The lofty valuation of Man Utd regarding Chris Smalling could prove pivotal after a forgotten Arsenal star emerged as a target for Roma.

Smalling enjoyed a career renaissance during his 12-month loan stint in Serie A.

The 30-year-old recently expressed where he would prefer to be playing next season. Though with Man Utd valuing him at around the £20m mark, a return to Roma appears unlikely.

Newcastle have registered their interest in acquiring the England international, but that still leaves Roma short in the centre-back department.

Now, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via SportWitness), Arsenal defender Sokratis has emerged on their radar.

The Greek veteran, 32, became a victim of the mid-season manager change at The Emirates.

Since football’s restart in June, Sokratis played precisely zero minutes of league action under Arteta.

With highly rated recent additions Pablo Mari and William Saliba on the books and just 12 months remaining on his current deal, Sokratis’ future would appear to lay away from North London.

SportWitness certainly think so, who cite the Italian outlet saying he is the ‘new name’ on Roma’s list.

Sokratis is familiar with Serie A having spent time there with Genoa and AC Milan, and could reportedly ‘say goodbye’ to Arsenal if Roma’s interest is acted on.

Meanwhile, new Arsenal winger Willian has revealed the extent to which fellow Brazilian David Luiz convinced him to ditch Chelsea for The Gunners.

Willian put pen to paper on a three-year deal with Arsenal last week after his contract at Stamford Bridge expired.

Willian Arsenal TEAMtalk

The Blues were reportedly keen to extend Willian’s stay, but the lure of a three-year deal proved pivotal in negotiations.

With a spotless injury record and years of consistent service behind him, the pick-up has been widely praised as smart business on Mikel Arteta’s behalf.

Now, speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Willian has opened up on the impact Luiz had on his decision.

“He’s [Luiz] very happy,” said Willian. “We played together in the national team, we played together at Chelsea, and now at Arsenal again.
