Manchester United ‘watching’ player deemed not good enough for Monaco

Manchester United are said to be among the big-name clubs keeping a close eye on talented Brest midfielder Romain Faivre.

The 22-year-old, capped four times by France Under-21s, joined Monaco from Tours in 2017. Having played for Tours’ reserves, he occupied the same position in the principality, making just one first-team appearance.

With little prospect of any regular game time with Les Monegasques, he opted for a move last summer. And it seems to have paid off, as the schemer has been turning heads with his displays for Les Pirates.

He has featured regularly and contributed four goals and three assists from 18 starts in 19 Ligue 1 matches this term.

Le10 Sport are reporting that Red Devils scouts are eyeing the youngster but are not the only ones. Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to be interested and have watched Faivre a few times this campaign.

They will have been impressed by a man who cost Brest just €500,000. The Stade Francis-Le Ble club certainly have been, offering him new terms until 2025 on Christmas Eve.

The reports claims that for PSG it is a ‘simple observation’, while United are ‘attentive’ to his displays.

Solskjaer targeting youth

It seems unlikely that the Old Trafford money men would sanction a move for Faivre at the moment. They are about to unleash Amad Diallo on the world after finally completing his paperwork.

They agreed a deal with Diallo in October, with Atalanta receiving £37m for his signature. United feel the 18-year-old is worth every penny.

Solskjaer labelled him “one of the most exciting young prospects in the game”. The Ivorian and England’s Mason Greenwood have been tipped to terrorise Premier League defences.

It will be another string to the Norwegian’s bow after an excellent first four months of the campaign. A 10-match unbeaten league run sees them level on 33 points with table-topping Liverpool.

That came after a shaky start and means there is real optimism about a title challenge in 2020-2021. Whether or not they can maintain their form only time will tell but the signs are positive.

It was always going to take time for the former United striker to turn things around. There will doubtless be bumps along the way and Liverpool are still favourites.

But a young squad augers well for the future of the club and Faivre would add to their youthful ranks.
