Mazinho explains how Liverpool resisted serious PSG, Thiago approach

Mazinho, the father of Thiago Alcantara, has revealed how Paris Saint-Germain failed with an enquiry for the now-Liverpool midfielder during the summer.

Spain international Thiago moved to Anfield in the recent transfer window after an illustrious spell at Bayern Munich.

The 29-year-old was one of two marquee signings Liverpool made during the window, alongside Diogo Jota. However, Thiago’s deal turned out to be a long-running saga.

Indeed, after weeks of speculation throughout the summer, the midfielder only signed for the Reds in September.

Now, the player’s father – former Brazil star Mazinho – has revealed that PSG attempted their own deal for Thiago. However, after learning of Liverpool’s interest, they moved onto his brother Rafinha.

“I had spoken with [PSG director] Leonardo some time ago, but it was for Thiago,” the 54-year-old told France Football (via the Daily Mirror).

“Leonardo wanted to sign him for PSG, but Thiago had already made a deal with Liverpool. We then talked about Rafa, but he was not part of Leonardo’s plans at that time.

“I think he must have thought about it, that he saw the nature of the opportunity and it would be a blow to sign him.”

Rafinha signed for PSG on deadline day from Barcelona and Mazinho admitted doubt about the deal.

“When he started talking again, Leonardo had changed his mind. And it all sped up on the last day.

“It was Monday that we had to work hard to convince both clubs. We were scared, but thank God, five or six hours before the deadline, we made a deal.

“Leonardo wanted Thiago, he got Rafinha. And for Rafa, it was a dream to join such a club.”

Thiago has endured a stuttering start to life at Anfield. After encouraging displays against Chelsea and Everton, he suffered injury against the Toffees and has not returned.

However, Liverpool’s other marquee arrival, Diogo Jota, has hit the ground running with four goals in nine games.

Indeed, he has scored four goals in nine games, including back-to-back winning strikes in the Premier League.

As such, Peter Crouch believes that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp now faces a serious selection headache.
