Mesut Ozil made mega offer to quit Arteta’s Arsenal

Mesut Ozil has been offered a £15million-per-year contract in Saudi Arabia, according to a report.

Fanatik report that Ozil, whose current deal at the Emirates Stadium expires in 2021, has been approached by Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Nassr.

The Riyadh-based side want to sign Ozil this summer, but are willing to wait to sign him for free next summer if a transfer fee cannot be agreed with the Gunners.

The mammoth offer equates to around £288,000 a week before tax.

Ozil was left out of the squad for the Community Shield win over Liverpool at the weekend and he has not featured for the club since the return of football after the coronavirus break.

The 31-year-old has been ostracised from Mikel Arteta’s squad. He made just 23 appearances in 2019-20, and the Gunners are believed to be looking at options to offload the playmaker.

The majority of Arsenal’s players and staff agreed to lower their pay in April as part of coronavirus cost-cutting measures.

The club cut salaries by 12.5 per cent, reduced to 7.5 per cent when Arsenal won the FA Cup earlier this month. What’s more, club executives agreed to cut a third of their pay packets.

However, the Gunners’ top earner Ozil did not take part. And speaking to The Athletic, Ozil was critical of the process.

“It was far too quick for something so important and there was a lot of pressure. This was not fair, especially for the young guys, and I refused.”

Training with Flamini

Arteta, speaking ahead of his team’s Community Shield clash with Liverpool, dismissed the idea that players were not put in the picture.

“The club had a very thorough plan of how they needed to restructure in order to be more stable for the future,” said the Spaniard. ‘They were very convincing with every argument they gave to all of us that it was the right thing to do.”

Ozil has since been training with Getafe midfielder and former Arsenal pal Mathieu Flamini, with the pair posting a picture from their session on Instagram.

Ozil is Arsenal’s top earner, on reported £350,000 per week, but there have been no indications from his agent that he will move on.

Speaking to Turkish publication Fanatik (via Goal) Erkut Sogut said in July: “I do not think there will be a change in the case of Mesut Ozil until the summer of 2021.

“He has a contract. There is no change. He will remain in Arsenal.”
