Tottenham have registered their interest in acquiring an exciting South American winger who notched 12 goals in his first campaign on European shores.

The lack of Champions League football next year will undoubtedly cause a financial hit. But Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has been handed a transfer boost from up above nevertheless.

Further to that, the Portuguese is cited by The Scottish Sun as saying: “Have I had assurances I will not need to sell key players this summer? Yes.

“We don’t want to sell our important players and that immediately is a limitation because by not selling big players you also don’t have big incomings.

“So we are going to be very balanced but again the objective is to improve the squad.

“I’m totally convinced we’re going to manage.”

One player who could therefore fit this summer’s transfer strategy is FC Porto winger Luis Diaz.

The Colombian, 23, has been a revelation in his first European campaign since joining from Colombian side Junior.

12 goals in all competitions have been struck, including four in 10 in the Champions League/Europa League.

Coming from the Portuguese league, however, Diaz could conceivably be classified as not a ‘big incoming’, and therefore suit the summer plan.

The Scottish Sun article note that Diaz has ‘caught the eye’ of Mourinho. While Portuguese outlet Record is cited as suggesting Spurs could be about to act on their interest.

Mourinho takes aim at Bruno Fernandes and Man Utd

Mourinho Tottenham TEAMtalk

Meanwhile, Mourinho’s former club – The Red Devils – have come in for scorn from the Portuguese.

Man Utd found a rich vein of form over the latter and punctuated 2019/20 season. Solskjaer’s side remained unbeaten in the Premier League since a 2-0 home defeat to Burnley on January 22 – form which secured a third-placed finish.

That will bring with it a return to the Champions League next season – and a guaranteed £120m windfall.

A big part of their revival has been the astonishing form shown by Fernandes. Since arriving in an initial £46.6m deal, Fernandes has netted eight goals and added a further seven assists.

Fernandes was on target at Leicester from the penalty spot on the final day. The Portuguese star tucked home their 14th spot-kick of the season.

And seemingly their apparent favouritism from referees has drawn a sly dig from their former boss Mourinho.
