Newcastle takeover: Edinson Cavani, Kalidou Koulibaly and Nabil Fekir – how Magpies could look with latest transfer targets

The proposed takeover of Newcastle is edging ever closer and a host of superstars from all over Europe continue to be linked with moves to St James’ Park.

After 13 years of hurt under Mike Ashley, Magpies fans are finally daring to dream as a £300million bid by PCP Capital Partners, headed by Amanda Staveley and backed the Saudi royal family’s Public Investment Fund, is on the verge of completion.

It’s an exciting time for all at St James’ Park

The transfer rumour mill is now in full swing as the new owners get set to move in.

The Toon are on the verge of becoming the wealthiest club in the league – but who are the main names being linked and could this XI challenge for the top four?

Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli)

The Senegal defender has repeatedly been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent seasons, with Manchester United and Chelsea among the interested parties but a deal never coming to fruition.

But with the Red Devils spending big to sign Harry Maguire last summer and Chelsea now prioritising the recruitment of other positions, St James’ Park now seems to be a feasible destination for the imperious centre-half.

It is believed Koulibaly is going to step up his efforts to seal a move away from Napoli as he looks for a new challenge and, according to The Sun, the incoming Newcastle owners are planning an audacious bid for the 28-year-old.

The Serie A club would reportedly part ways with their defender for £70m – £30m more than the record £40m fee the club paid for Joelinton last July.

PSG are also keen to sign the defender but he is said to be unsure on whether that is the next step he wants to take in his career.

Should Newcastle pursue a deal, he would most likely play in a back line with Danny Rose next term as the Magpies eye up a permanent deal for the Tottenham left-back.

Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)

According to Foot Mercato, the Magpies are also eyeing up a move for veteran striker Cavani this summer as they look to provide competition for the misfiring Joelinton.

The Brazilian, who arrived from Hoffenheim for a jaw-dropping £40m last summer, has struggled this season with just one goal in 29 Premier League appearances.

Tyneside chiefs are desperate to recruit a proven goalscorer in their ranks – and who better than Cavani?

Since he made his debut for Palermo in 2007, only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more goals in Europe’s top five leagues

Barring this campaign, the striker has scored more than 20 goals in his last ten seasons straight – including more than 40 strikes in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons.

He is set to be a free agent this summer and at the ripe age of 33, he could be just the signing that Newcastle need as they start their new era.

However, the club face competition for his services, with Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors, Flamengo and Palmeiras all monitoring the Uruguay international striker.

Cavani has featured in just 14 matches in Ligue 1 this year, netting two goals, and that is due to Mauro Icardi establishing himself as the first choice striker at the club
