Palace reject £20m bid for Sorloth, Trabzonspor have a say on any deal

Crystal Palace have rejected a bid of around £20m from RB Leipzig for Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth.

Sorloth joined the Eagles in 2018 from FC Midtjylland for £9m. He managed just one goal for Palace, in the EFL Cup, before being loaned to Gent in January 2019.

This season though, it’s safe to say Sorloth found his shooting boots. The 6’4″ forward smashed in 26 goals on loan at Trabzonspor.

This is the form that has led to Leipzig’s interest and means that incredibly, Crystal Palace could end up doubling their money on a man who hasn’t scored a league goal for them.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side are in the market for a striker after losing star man Timo Werner to Chelsea. They see Sorloth as a potential replacement for the German.

Leipzig could yet lose another striker this summer too. Loan star Patrik Schick is tipped to join Bayer Leverkusen instead of signing a permanent deal. Also, there remains uncertainty about the future of Jean-Kevin Augustin.

The French forward spent the second half of last season on loan at Leeds, but played just 48 minutes for the Whites.

Leeds understandably don’t want to sign the 23-year-old, but Leipzig insist the Premier League club have an obligation to buy. The matter remains unresolved with Leipzig threatening legal action.

Turkish side could have a part to play

One twist in Leipzig’s potential move for Sorloth is that Trabzonspor, who currently have the striker on loan for another season. They are obliged to buy him next summer and would have to approve any deal to sell him in this window.

Trabzonspor boss Eddie Newton has insisted that shouldn’t be a problem though.

“If someone wants to purchase him at an agreed price then I think it would be foolhardy for the club to turn it down,” he said recently.
