Paper Talk: Ben White price soars as Man Utd prep mega offer; Leeds settle on £12m alternative

Manchester United have emerged as favourites to sign Ben White after a massive approach was reported, Leeds have settled on a £12m alternative, while Tottenham could sign a surprise new goalkeeper, according to Monday’s newspaper gossip.

Manchester United are the new favourites to sign Ben White from Brighton this summer.

White enjoyed a glorious season with Leeds as the ever-present helped Marcelo Bielsa’s side to promotion.

White arrived at Leeds as a relative unknown. But the form he displayed under Bielsa has seen him hyped as a future England international. His price has soared as a result.

Leeds are understandbly desperate to bring White back to Elland Road in a permanent deal. It’s widely reported that bids of £18m and £22m have been rejected by the Seagulls.

There have been unsubstantiated claims that a third Leeds bid worth £30m has also been turned down.

However, according to a report in The Sun, Leeds have now seen a bid worth £35m rejected. That compromises £30m up front and a further £5m in add-ons.

The news gets worse for Leeds too. The Sun now claims Brighton value White at nearer £50m. Furthermore, they say Manchester United have now joined the race and are desperate to trump Leeds to his signature.

The report does not go into further detail of United’s interest but it does seem strange given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to recruit a left-footed centre-half.

The right-footed White has two years left on his Brighton deal. But it’s claimed the Seagulls feel that his value will only soar once he has a season in the Premier League; hence why they are determined to hold out for £50m now.

With Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City also credited with an interest, the saga over White’s future shows no signs of ending soon….
