Paul Scholes dangles Liverpool carrot to Gini Wijnaldum amid Barcelona links

Paul Scholes claims Georginio Wijnaldum would be making a mistake quitting Liverpool for Barcelona after declaring his belief that Jurgen Klopp’s side will win the Premier League title again this season.

Wijnaldum is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, where he has been since 2016. In that time, he has picked up medals in the Premier League and Champions League.

He remains a key player for Jurgen Klopp, but his coach may soon have to find a way to work without him. Wijnaldum will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January.

The Dutchman served a timely reminder of his importance to Liverpool with another stellar display on Sunday. And the goal Wijnaldum scored was the pick of the bunch as Wolves were crushed 4-0 at Anfield.

Asked about the midfielder after the game, Klopp admitted he still hoped the Dutchman would stay.

“I hope so. You can see he plays all the time, we have a very good relationship,” the German said.

But while Klopp wasn’t able to say too much, Amazon Prime pundit Scholes made it perfectly clear why a move to Barcelona would be a mistake.

“Why would he want to leave, the way they (Liverpool) are playing with attacking football every week?

“He was linked to Barcelona but it never came off, but why would you want to leave? I think they’ll win the league again and it’s an exciting team for him to play in.

“He’s a Barcelona style player and he could fit into Barcelona’s system. And I know there’s that Dutch connection – that’s going to be big at Barcelona. Especially with Koeman there or for how much longer we don’t know because they’re struggling. But why would you leave such an exciting team?”

Pressed on why he admires him so much, Scholes added: “I just like everything he does. He goes about his business quietly, there’s nothing flashy about his game. He’s great defensively, he’s a real plus point for Liverpool.

“He plays every week, he’s one of the first names on the teamsheet. And he pops up with important goals, it’s his first of the season but over the last few years he’s been brilliant.”

Scholes becomes the second former Manchester United legend to pile praise on Wijnaldum. Last week, Rio Ferdinand proclaimed his “love” for the Reds star.

Those feelings were echoed by Scholes’ fellow Amazon Prime pundit Peter Crouch.

He also deplored Wijnaldum not to quit Liverpool for Barcelona.

“You look at Barcelona and Real Madrid and they’re the holy grail for some players but sometimes it doesn’t work out. Liverpool are a better option than them.”

Wijnaldum coy on Liverpool future

Wijnaldum himself was quick to dodge the questions posed to him about his Liverpool future after Sunday’s win.

“I already said in my previous interview that I don’t want to speak about my contract situation,” Wijnaldum said. “I talk about games, performances and football. The club should speak about this.

“Of course there’s a connection (with the club and the fans), there was a connection from the first moment I came here. The fans support me a lot.”
