Potter key as Brighton enter race for Leeds target after Man Utd decision

Graham Potter is eyeing a potential reunion with Manchester United winger Daniel James at Brighton, as they prepare for another transfer battle with Leeds.

That’s according to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein, who claims Brighton are ready to join the race for James.

The Welsh winger was close to joining Leeds in January 2019, before a move fell through. He eventually ended up at Manchester United that summer instead.

Despite a promising start to his career at Old Trafford, James has fallen down the pecking order. He has managed just one Premier League start this season, and was taken off at half-time.

Therefore, speculation has arisen recently that Leeds could go back in for the 22-year-old. Marcelo Bielsa wants another attacking midfielder, and could reignite his interest in James.

However, there are two problems. The first comes from Brighton, with Ornstein saying Potter wants to make a move for the player, who he previously worked with at Swansea.

Potter was the coach who gave James his Championship debut in 2018, going on to use him 38 times in all competitions before both left Swansea last summer.

He would be happy to welcome James to Brighton, where he is embarking on an ambitious second season in charge. In fact, in their most recent game, they pushed James’ current club close in a last-gasp 3-2 defeat.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left James out of his squad entirely for that game, which suggests he is surplus to requirements.

James to fight for place

However, the second problem presumably applies not just for Leeds, but also for Brighton. According to Sky Sports, James wants to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place.

Man Utd could let James leave on loan, but if they fail to sign Jadon Sancho or a different replacement, then the Welshman could have another opportunity in the red shirt.

Reports on Monday morning suggested that Solskjaer was quietly confident as United prepared one last bid for Sancho.

However, if Dortmund decide against accepting, as they have done all summer, then James may have to stay put.
