Prolific Bayer Leverkusen striker confirms interest from Bielsa, Leeds

Leeds United made a summer approach to sign Lucas Alario, the Argentina striker has himself revealed.

The Whites secured promotion back to the Premier League after a 16-year hiatus this summer and immediately set about strengthening their squad.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side invested heavily in four major signings. Rodrigo Moreno, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente and Raphinha were all acquired as Leeds invested over £70million.

The deal to sign Spain striker Rodrigo was perhaps the most eye-catching. The striker cost Leeds a club-record £27.2m when switching from Valencia.

He has one goal to his name so far, but has largely impressed in a slightly-deeper role. Rodrigo, however, missed Monday’s defeat to Leicester and has since confirmed he has tested positive for coronavirus.

However, it has now emerged Leeds also had other irons in the fire and also asked about Bayer Leverkusen frontman Alario.

The player has confirmed their approach in an interview with TyC Sports. As per the interview, he states Leeds did not quite get round to making a concrete bid. That is preumably after they received the green light from Valencia to pursue a deal for Rodrigo.

“I had no contact nor did I speak with Marcelo [Bielsa]. I know about the rumour because my representative told me, but it was only an approach,” the striker commented.

“They asked my representative and then the club, but then it didn’t advance much further.”

Lucas Alario joined Bayer Leverkusen in a €24m deal in 2017. He has 43 goals in 106 appearances for the club, including seven in eight so far this season.

Last week his agent also claimed he was the subject of a loan approach from Tottenham, prior to their signing of Carlos Viniscus.

Radrizzani has Bielsa plan

Andrea Radrizzani, meanwhile, says he will not lose any sleep if Marcelo Bielsa decides to leave the Premier League new boys.

Bielsa only signed another one-year rolling contract in the summer after Leeds’ promotion from the Championship.

That means the 65-year-old will fall out of contract in July, but Radrizzani is sure the Argentinian will stay on at Elland Road.

But if Bielsa calls it a day next summer, Radrizzani will have no issues because he will be leaving behind a “proper club”.

Radrizzani told beIN SPORTS via The Sun: “I hope he can stay with us for a long time. But we like to decide year by year because, obviously, he’s not a young manager. He’s 65 and his family, his wife is often in Argentina.

“Hopefully, he can stay longer – 60 is the new 40 these days!

“If not, I think what he’s building is the foundation for a proper club.

“He has put in the foundations for the future without him.”
