Pundit claims £80m-rated midfield enforcer ‘stinks of a Man Utd signing’

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has been backed to join Manchester United after his latest impressive display.

The England international ran the show as the Hammers came from behind to win 2-1 at Leeds on Friday evening.

Rice has firmly established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League. He is also a regular starter under England boss Gareth Southgate.

The 21-year-old has been continually linked with a return to Chelsea, where he began his career in their academy.

However, the Hammers have so far resisted all offers for a player who is rated at a whopping £80million.

But rather than swapping one London club for another, talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino believes Rice could join United in the near future.

With Paul Pogba’s agent stating his desire to leave in the new year, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be in the market for another midfielder.

Bruno Fernandes has virtually carried United in the first quarter of the new season. That is due to the fact that Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic have all had their struggles.

And Cascarino, speaking after West Ham’s victory at Leeds, thinks Rice is the perfect fit for United.

“Declan Rice was superb. He absolutely ran the show in midfield.

“He was up against Kalvin Phillips as well, who is a good player. I thought he just took the game by the scruff of the neck.

“He just stunk of a Manchester United signing to me. I was sat there thinking, ‘Wow!’”

Rio wants Spurs man at Old Trafford

Rio Ferdinand has named the Tottenham player he feels Manchester United could sign to make a major difference at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for Harry Kane. But Ferdinand believes the England skipper will be out of reach and wants another Spurs star who ‘hurt teams’.

With the January transfer window imminent, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be backed to bring in new signings.

A centre-back, a midfielder and a winger are the areas United will look to improve.

Solskjaer has missed out on the likes of Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland over the past 12 months. However, Ferdinand believes his old side should try and see if Spurs are willing to sell Son Heung-min.

The South Korean has scored 13 in all competitions this season for the Premier League high-fliers.

Spurs are currently trying to tie him down to a new deal. Ferdinand, however, feels that the attacker would be a viable option for Ed Woodward and co.

“Son – if there’s a player I could take now who I feel is gettable, he’d be up there as one of my first picks,” said the former England defender on Rio Ferdinand presents FIVE, as cited by the Daily Express. “Definitely in my top three.” Read more…
