Pundit hears whispers over Winks Tottenham future and expects exit

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes Harry Winks’ only chance of making England’s European Championship squad is to quit Tottenham in January.

Winks, 24, has been a regular in Spurs’ Premier League side, making 57 appearances over the past two seasons. However, he has enjoyed only four outings and three starts in the league this term.

Manager Jose Mourinho has preferred to use the England international in the Europa League, handing him five starts. But, according to Campbell, that will not be enough to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Euro 2020 has been delayed until next summer due to the pandemic, giving Winks time to impress. However, it may well have to be at another club, with limited opportunities in north London.

“Harry Winks is a full England international but he is not always in that Spurs team,” Campbell told Football Insider. “He is young enough to know whether he fancies his chances of actually being a starter at Spurs. He may feel that in order to further his career he has to leave.”

Mourinho flirted with the idea of selling Winks to Manchester City in the summer. But the Hemel Hempstead-born ace remained and his long-term future is still unclear.

Too many midfield chiefs

Mourinho has many options in the centre of the park and it is hard to see were Winks fits in. He appears behind Pierre-Emile Hjojberg, Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso in the pecking order.

Valued at around £40m by the Lilywhites, Winks is a firm favourite with the Spurs’ faithful. Campbell believes that the youngster will move on in the new year and there will certainly be plenty of suitors.

“Winks has not been the first picked this season and that could prove to be a problem,” he added. “With the Euros coming up he will have international ambitions.

“He will want to be in that squad so there is no point in him sitting on the bench or sitting in the stands. From what I hear, I think he will have to make a move in January.”

Although popular in the stands, there is a sense that supporters will give Mourinho some leeway with Winks. Spurs sit second in the top-flight table and have been tipped to mount a challenge for the title.

That could mean sacrificing the schemer – either on loan or on a permanent basis. But the Premier League trophy would appease the fans and afford the Portuguese tactician legendary status at the club.
