Real Madrid assert dominance over Man Utd, Liverpool with deal close

Real Madrid appear set to succeed where Man Utd and Liverpool will fail with a deal for a top defensive target reportedly ‘in the oven’.

The Spanish giant – along with Barcelona – have always been seen as an enticing destination for most footballers.

Despite the riches and competitive edge of the Premier League, the La Liga duo have often acted as the apex predators in the transfer market.

Nevertheless, Liverpool and Man Utd are expected to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements in the near future.

The Reds failed to adequately replace Dejan Lovren in the summer. As a result, defensive options have been scarce after the long-term injuries suffered by Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

On the other hand, Man Utd have an abundance of centre-halves. However, several are soon expected to depart Old Trafford in a clearout, with a Premier League side showing interest in one player in particular.

A potential recruit both sides have been linked with in recent times is Bayern Munich ace David Alaba.

The Austrian, 28, is in the final year of his contract in Bavaria. Despite his faultless service, his stay in the Bundesliga appears to be nearing its end.

Alaba is free to open talks with prospective future clubs in January ahead of a summer move. Liverpool were previously reported to be one club he would be ‘open’ to joining.

Man Utd then entered the mix, with reports claiming the club had made first contact with the player’s agent.

However, Spanish publication Marca has now cast doubt on a potential Premier League switch.

Alaba agreement ‘getting closer’

They report (via Goal) that a deal to take Alaba to the Bernabeu is ‘in the oven’.

Real are described as ‘getting closer’ to forging an agreement for the player they have always held in ‘high regard’.

The club were said to be reluctant to engage in a bidding war for his services. But his new-found availability as a soon-to-be free agent has altered their mindset.
