Roma look to Vertonghen as Smalling alternative

Roma have reportedly accepted that they will not be able to afford Chris Smalling and have started drawing up a list of alternatives, including Jan Vertonghen, according to Tuttosport.

Smalling is on loan in the Italian capital from Manchester United, but the Red Devils are demanding £18m (€20.1m/$21.8m) for the centre-back – a sum Roma cannot pay.

As a result, the Serie A side have set their sights on Tottenham defender Vertonghen, who is set to be a free agent next summer, but will have to compete with Napoli and Inter for the Belgian’s signature.
