Reports linking Sergio Reguilon with a return to former club Real Madrid next summer have been met with a forceful reply from Sergio Reguilon.
The left-back moved to Tottenham over the summer for £25m. However, his transfer contains a buy-back clause and that has seen him linked with a return to the Spanish champions.
Reguilon made his second Premier League appearance in the 3-3 draw with West Ham and laid on Harry Kane’s second goal.
He already looks like being a favourite of Jose Mourinho, but Spurs may not be able to do anything about losing him next summer.
Manchester United removed themselves from the running once it emerged Real wanted a repurchase option on the 23-year-old. Instead they signed Alex Telles.
That paved the way for Reguilon to join Spurs, with the Spain international signing a five-year contract.
The deal which was struck means that Real Madrid are able to buy the player back for an increased fee, either in the summer of 2021 or 2022. Los Blancos are also able to match an offer Spurs accept for the player in that time.
However, Reguilon insists he is content with his decision to move to north London and he has no thoughts of returning to Spain.
“It’s very difficult to go from the academy to the first team at Real Madrid,” he told Sky Sports.
“You have the best players in the world there and the level needed to get into the squad is very high.
“You have to believe in yourself, to know how to fight, and to get that little bit of luck that every player needs.
“Real Madrid is the club where I was made, the club where I grew up, and I would be nothing without them.
“Leaving was a difficult step to take but it’s one you have to take at one point or another and, for me, I think it was the right time.
“It’s tough to leave your family and everything, but this league, for me, is the best in the world and I am very happy here. Now I just want to focus on trying to help this club win trophies.”
Reguilon has trophy aim for Tottenham
The left-back insists his only focus right now is helping Tottenham to end their long wait to win a trophy.
He believes he has a joined a squad more than capable of delivering success.
“I believe we have a squad capable of fighting for every competition,” Reguilon added.
“It’s true that we have a busy schedule this season and there are a lot of competitions, but we have the squad to be there.
“I try to take one game at a time, but we’ll begin to see where we can end up as the season progresses.”
