Solskjaer puts foot down as Man Utd resist winger loan offer

Atalanta winger Amad Diallo will reportedly be joining up with Manchester United this month, despite the Italian club’s hopes of keeping him for the rest of the season.

The 18-year-old signed on the dotted line in October with a view to making the switch in January once a work permit was attained.

Man Utd scouts had tracked the youngster dating back to 2016, and ultimately secured a deal for a fee potentially rising to £37m.

The Ivorian has rarely featured in the current campaign. However, hopes are high his huge potential can be unlocked at Old Trafford.

A spell in the club’s Under-23s would appear likely initially, and Solskjaer recently spoke of his impending arrival after their victory over Aston Villa, stating: “We have had all the paperwork, I can’t see any obstacles. He’s coming.”

However, the Manchester Evening News reported on Saturday that Atalanta were hopeful of retaining the player until season’s end via an immediate loan.

But now Fabrizio Romano has stated that Diallo will be joining up with the United squad this window. Adding that he will not play for Atalanta again.

Romano took to Twitter on Saturday evening to reveal that his arrival is now just a matter of time.

He is expected to join up with the club’s Under-23s initially. However, if he makes an immediate impact he could push for a first-team place sooner rather than later.

Liverpool have stalled with 1-1 draws against both West Brom and Newcastle. United, meanwhile, have picked up 10 points out of 12 over the Festive period.

And victory over Villa saw them join the Merseysiders on 33 points.

The top two are seven points clear of Manchester City. But Pep Guardiola’s men have two games in hand so the race looks a tight one.

However, Owen believes Liverpool and City remain the teams to beat. Read more…
