Source claims one issue preventing Christian Eriksen joining Arsenal

A frustrated Christian Eriksen is willing to make a controversial Premier League return with Arsenal, according to transfer expert Ian McGarry.

The classy Dane spent six and a half years at Tottenham from 2013 to January 2020 before quitting for Serie A.

The attacking midfielder was in the final few months of his contract with Spurs. Despite Daniel Levy’s best efforts, they could not convince him to sign a new deal.

Hence, Inter took their chance to buy him in the January transfer window, offering him a new adventure in Serie A. It has not worked out.

Indeed, Inter CEO Beppe Marotta recently admitted that the transfer, even though it was a “bargain”, has not been “functional” for the club.

Eriksen has struggled to find a role in Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 system. Hence, he has made just three starts in the league this season.

The Danish international is now the subject of speculation about another move in January. Inter could cut their losses just 12 months after signing him.

Reports have linked him with a return to Tottenham. However, a report earlier this week stated Jose Mourinho had rejected the idea of a reunion.

Arsenal, on the other hand, do very much need a creative midfielder and Eriksen appears to tick all the boxes.

Indeed, McGarry – speaking on the Transfer Window podcast – claims the Dane would be willing to make the move. However, he states there is one issue blocking his path – the ire he may face for ‘crossing the North London divide’.

“I was told that he is slightly concerned about the possibility of obviously crossing the north London divide. Having been a Tottenham player and very much a Tottenham favourite for many years, and going to Arsenal,” McGarry explained.

“However, such as his particular situation and and circumstance, he wouldn’t rule it out. He still owns a house in north London, so therefore going back there and going to the training ground in [London] Colney rather than to the Tottenham Hotspur training ground is a convenience for him and his wife.

“Also, [the source] said the thing about Christian is he felt at his age and experience and his talent merited a new football experience. That’s how he explained his desire to leave Spurs last January.”

Arteta ‘worried’

Arsenal are on a run of just one win from their last six Premier League games.

Asked about the team’s poor form, Arteta said: “I’m really worried about the results and the margins that we are losing games. Because when we analyse the games afterwards ‘why are we losing these games when they are so tight?’.

“There is a reason that sometimes you win it and sometimes you lose it but we need to recover. Sometimes it’s a lack of confidence in certain moments because we conceded as well, probably it’s not our standards.

“Then obviously the goals we need to score to win football matches more consistently. When you compare what Wolves did and what we did in a normal scenario we should not lose that game.”
