Southampton targeting Liverpool star provides timely Tottenham boost

Southampton have lined up an outgoing Liverpool star to replace a midfielder strongly rumoured to be Tottenham-bound.

Spurs have recently been linked with a swoop for Saints midfield general Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

The Dane, 24, has made clear his desire to move to the North London club after talks recently commenced.

Should Hojbjerg depart, Saints would need to act fast to find a suitable replacement. And The Express have revealed their sights are now set on Adam Lallana.

The 32-year-old will depart Anfield this summer as a free agent, six years after joining in a £25m move from Southampton.

The recent Premier League winner had agreed a short-term extension to cover the extended season. But came to an agreement with Jurgen Klopp that would prevent the chances of his next move being jeopardised.

Several other Premier League clubs have registered their interest – including one shock name – but Saints boss Ralph Hassenhuttl will be hopeful sentimentality will play a part in Lallana’s decision.

Southampton are described as having been ‘plotting to resign the midfielder for months,’ amid their resurgent finish to the season.

The news that Southampton are already lining up a replacement player suggests Tottenham’s chances of securing Hojbjerg’s signature are high.

A fee in the region of £25m is expected to be required after Everton expressed interest touting a similar amount.

Lampard slams ‘arrogant’ Liverpool

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard called on Liverpool’s backroom staff not to be “arrogant” in their celebrations after a heated touchline row with head coach Klopp.

The comments were sparked after an incident midway through Liverpool’s 5-3 win over the Blues, after which the Reds lifted the Premier League trophy.

Lampard was angered when referee Andre Marriner gave a free-kick for Mateo Kovacic’s clash with Sadio Mane. Indeed, the tackle came in after Naby Keita had fired Liverpool into a first-half lead with a fantastic strike.

Blues midfielder Kovacic went into the back of Mane, handing Trent Alexander-Arnold the perfect opportunity to double his side’s lead from the resultant set-piece.

In response to Marriner’s decision, Lampard immediately exchanged words with Klopp from his technical area. Speaking after the game, though, Lampard insisted his emotions carried him in an action-packed first half.
