West Ham ask after rival Serie A goalkeepers, but one not keen on move

West Ham have turned their attention towards the Italian capital in their search for a new goalkeeper, according to reports.

Lukasz Fabianski is currently their number one, but they are looking for more competition for the Poland international.

The Hammers allowed Roberto to leave the club in the summer after he failed to impress, but did not sign a replacement for their previous backup.

That has left Darren Randolph as the main competition for Fabianski. But with both players in their 30s, the club could be considering a longer-term option.

It appears West Ham are interested in two Serie A shot-stoppers plying their trade for rival clubs. Roma’s Pau Lopez and Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha have now been linked.

According to Calciomercato, an intermediary has been working on West Ham’s behalf to try and test the waters for a deal for Lopez.

The 26-year-old, who once spent a season at Tottenham without ever playing, lost his place to Antonio Mirante, a man more than 10 years his senior, earlier this season.

Therefore, there have been suggestions that he could be on the market. That has put Premier League sides on alert.

However, Lopez has recently regained his starting role for Roma. With that in mind, the Spaniard is delaying a decision about his future until the end of the season.

Hence, he will reject the chance to return to London with West Ham.

Strakosha also an option

The report also claims that West Ham have made enquiries about another goalkeeper playing in Rome – Lazio’s Strakosha.

At 25 years old, Strakosha has been a regular for Lazio over the past few seasons. After graduating their academy ranks, the Albanian has made more than 170 first-team appearances and kept nearly 50 clean sheets.

The current season has also been difficult for Strakosha, though, due to a positive Covid-19 test and some injury problems. Veteran former Liverpool and Aston Villa keeper Pepe Reina has played more than him.

Therefore, West Ham may try to lure him to a new destination so he can get back on track.

Strakosha only has 18 months left on his contract, whereas Lopez still has three-and-a-half years, so the Lazio man may be easier to acquire. His mood over a potential transfer is not yet clear, though.
